"Flooding remains a significant concern in the Houston region, with heavy rainfall causing several local communities to evacuate. More heavy rain is expected, especially in areas prone to flooding, which received over 6 inches of rain over the weekend.
A flood watch is in effect through Thursday night for much of Southeast Texas, including Houston and Harris County. Here's what to expect in terms of additional rainfall this week and when drier conditions will return.
Storm Timeline:
Thursday Morning: Storms are forecasted to start early Thursday, primarily north and west of Houston. For areas near and north of Conroe, heavy rainfall is expected as early as 4 or 5 a.m. The line of storms that developed Wednesday evening in the Big Bend region will move towards Houston between 6 and 8 a.m. These initial storms could bring damaging winds along with the risk of heavy rainfall.
Thursday Afternoon: Storms from earlier in the day should move offshore by late morning. However, a continuous influx of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will maintain scattered storm chances, especially for areas north of Houston, where additional rainfall could worsen ongoing river flooding. Areas closer to the coast may experience a temporary break from rain and storm chances.
Thursday Night: Patchy storms are expected to continue overnight Thursday, with heavy rainfall focused along and north of Highway 10 after midnight.

Friday Morning: High-resolution weather models suggest another cluster of storms during the first half of Friday, likely near and north of Huntsville.
Friday Afternoon: Storm chances increase in the Houston area by the afternoon. Forecast models indicate the possibility of a line of storms arriving by early evening, bringing a risk of damaging winds and heavy rainfall. Rain is expected to taper off from north to south as drier air moves in behind this round of rain and storms.
Staying Safe from Rising Waters: Nearly 30% of flash floods in Texas since 2013 have occurred in May. Learn how to stay safe here.
Friday Night: After another round of heavy rainfall and storms, Friday night should bring drier weather. Cloudy conditions are likely to persist overnight, with humid air also expected to linger.
Heavy Rainfall Expected:
A widespread area of 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected across the Houston area through the weekend. North of Houston, rainfall amounts between 2 and 5 inches are expected to be more common. In some areas, particularly north of Houston, rainfall totals could be much higher, with model guidance suggesting totals between 6 and 10 inches through Friday.
Those living along swollen rivers should closely monitor water levels over the next few days as rising waters are possible.
When Drier Conditions Arrive:
The pattern becomes somewhat quieter this weekend into next week. While a few storms will be possible west of the Brazos and near the Piney Woods on Saturday, most of Southeast Texas will see dry weather this weekend.
Temperatures during this time will generally be in the lower to mid-80s, with upper 80s and lower 90s expected by early next week."
